    MARINA

The siren’s cold declaration echoes off the petrified wood. We sent the current to pull you to her boat. Bring the leather tube to the deep.

Caio stands in the shallow water, his broad shoulders rigid, his eyes dark and empty. He doesn’t deny it. He doesn’t move. He was the bait, shaped by the court’s manipulation, unaware of his own role until this exact second.

I look at the heavy vellum map in my hands. The amber ink pulses, a beacon calling the court’s magic to seal this place forever. If I keep it, I am their prisoner. If I use it to draw an exit, I finalize the cage.

I do not look at the siren. I look at Caio. I look at the dark bruise on his throat where he tore his own magic out to prove I was safe with him.

I uncap the glass vial of rain-ink.

"You want the map," I say to the siren, my voice steady over the rush of the water.

I pour the entire vial of crushed riverbed minerals and bitter ozone directly over the unrolled vellum. The black liquid hits the pulsing amber lines.

I don’t draw a door. I crush the parchment in my fists, smearing the ink into a chaotic, formless stain, and shove the ruined map deep into the stagnant water at my knees.

The extraction is immediate and absolute.

The memory of my mother’s voice, humming a lullaby on the porch before the flood took her, is violently excised from my mind. I gasp, my knees buckling as the void opens in my head. I burn the last anchor of my past to destroy their net.

    CAIO

The vellum sinks into the dark water.

The rain-ink does not form a boundary. It bleeds outward in a chaotic, expanding cloud of black and silver, reacting violently with the stagnant magic of the Encante. It is the visual collapse of a cage.

Marina falls to her knees in the mud, clutching her head, shivering from the brutal cost of the sacrifice.

She didn’t try to bargain for her life. She didn’t hand them the tool that would have bought her safe passage to the surface. She destroyed her only way home, just to ensure my people could not use it to lock themselves in the dark, and to ensure I would not be the one who delivered her to them.

    MARINA

The air pressure in the hollow drops to zero.

The destruction of the map creates a magical vacuum. The water around my thighs begins to boil, frothing with a deafening hiss. The shockwave hits a second later.

The blast of displaced magic throws the armored guards backward into the roots. The sound is a physical weight, crushing the breath from my lungs. The bioluminescent algae flares blindingly bright, then dies, plunging the cavern into heavy shadows.

Strong hands grab my waist. Caio hauls me out of the boiling water, dragging me backward into a deep, dry fissure in the mahogany roots just as a massive surge of current sweeps through the channel where I was kneeling.

I am pressed flat against the damp bark, my chest heaving, deafened by the roar of the collapsing magic.

    CAIO

I pin her against the wood, shielding her with my body as the water thrashes outside the fissure.

She is trembling, her eyes wide and clear in the gloom. She gave up her history for me.

The court is recovering. I can feel the ancient, heavy will of the sirens reaching through the water, trying to latch onto the nearest conduit to stabilize the realm. They are reaching for me. They will use my connection to the Encante to force the rivers closed.

I will not let them use me again.

I look down at Marina. I lean my forehead against hers.

I pull the final, sacred name of the Encante’s heart—the deepest trench of my home—into my mind. And then, with a brutal, deliberate force of will, I let it dissolve.

The severance is an agonizing tear in my chest. The golden tether that connects me to the river court snaps. I am completely, irreversibly unmoored. I am no longer a creature of the deep. I am just a man in the dark.

I drag my mouth down to hers.

There is no hesitation, no magic, no manipulation. There is only the starving, desperate reality of my hands gripping her waist. She gasps against my lips, her fingers tangling fiercely in my wet hair, anchoring me as the memory of my home vanishes into static.

I strip her soaked shirt over her head, the cold air hitting her skin for only a heartbeat before I press my chest against hers. The friction is a blazing heat in the freezing fissure. She pulls blindly at my belt, her hands frantic, tearing away the wet fabric of my clothes.

I lift her. She wraps her legs around my waist, her back pressed against the rough bark.

    I push into her.

The stretch is deep and absolute. She cries out, a sharp, ragged sound that I swallow with my mouth. I lock my arms under her thighs, holding her completely, driving myself into the tight, scorching heat of her body. The rhythm is violent, matching the chaotic roar of the water outside.

Every thrust is a rejection of the world that tried to cage us. She digs her nails into my shoulders, her head thrown back, her breath hitching in a frantic cadence. I trace the curve of her throat with my teeth, tasting salt and river water, pushing deeper until the tension in her body snaps. She shudders violently, crying my name, her internal muscles clenching around me. The wave hits me a second later, a blinding, heavy rush that empties my lungs completely.

I collapse forward, burying my face in the hollow of her neck, my pulse hammering a frantic rhythm against her skin. We are entirely alone.

    MARINA

The heat of his body is the only solid thing left in the world.

I hold him tightly, my fingers tracing the hard muscles of his back, my breathing slowly syncing with his.

    But the silence doesn’t last.

A low, terrifying rumble vibrates through the petrified mahogany at my back. It is not the chaotic splash of the ruined map. It is a coordinated, massive shift in pressure.

I look past Caio’s shoulder, out the narrow opening of the fissure.

The court did not retreat. The sirens have abandoned the localized magic of the map and are pulling directly from the deep ocean.

The inverted river above us, the ceiling of the Encante, begins to bulge downward. The amber glass shatters.

Millions of gallons of dark, freezing water detach from the roots and begin to free-fall directly toward us, a tidal wave dropping from the sky to drown the entire hollow.
