Where forbidden tales are told.

    The islands answer together.

Each delegation offers one uninhabited lava channel, dividing the surge into seven smaller rivers. No island escapes damage. No island becomes the sacrifice.

Rauk and I carry the decision to the oath-stones. He no longer commands magma, but he knows its structure. I no longer sell prophecy, but I can imagine paths no engineer would test. We place our hands on the stone without a marriage performance or royal audience.

“I cannot promise never to lie,” I say. “I can promise to tell you before the lie becomes your prison.”

“I cannot promise never to control,” he answers. “I can surrender the power that makes control final.”

    The stone accepts imperfect truths.

Seven lava rivers divide beneath the city. They emerge on distant cliffs as harmless red waterfalls. Offshore, the supervolcano exhales steam instead of ash.

The old throne does not survive. The islands form a rotating alliance whose leaders must disclose one politically costly truth each year—not as sacrifice, but as proof that authority remains answerable. Ordinary citizens keep the volcano cool with smaller truths offered freely.

I work as a fraud auditor, a career everyone finds hilarious except the former clients required to repay victims. Rauk becomes chief engineer of the caldera network. Without sacred blood, he remains an excellent dragon shifter and an infuriating administrator.

Months later we meet in a field of cool black glass where the palace stood. He carries measuring rods. I carry maps with margins large enough for correction.

There is no crown and no oracle’s veil between us.

“One-year agreement,” I propose. “Renewable. Either party may leave. No prophecies.”

    “One prediction,” he says.

    “Dangerous.”

“You will move every marker when I am not looking.”

    “That is an observation.”

We walk toward the quiet crater, arguing about measurements. Below, the volcano sleeps not because a king has spoken one perfect truth, but because millions of people are no longer forced to live inside his lie.

At the rim, Rauk offers his hand. I take it without an audience.

    The mountain remains silent.

For once, silence is not deception. It is peace.
