Where forbidden tales are told.

The golden flare burns through the high arched windows, casting harsh, sterile silhouettes across the obsidian walls of the sanctum.

The heat of Lien Chau’s skin against mine, the damp weight of her hair slipping over my collarbone, the fragile, terrifying softness of what we just built—it all instantly crystallizes into ice. The air pressure crushes down. The scent of our shared breath is obliterated by the sharp, metallic stench of ozone and mobilized magic.

I step back from the stone table, my bare feet hitting the freezing floor. The beast beneath my skin, sated only moments ago, violently jolts awake. It thrashes against my ribs, tearing at the fresh scar, demanding blood.

Lien Chau scrambles backward, clutching the white silk to her chest. Her bruised-sky eyes are wide, reflecting the unnatural, blinding glare from the sky outside. At her feet lies the unrolled parchment. Order of Absolute Erasure.

"I did not trigger that," she says, her voice fracturing. The polished lacquer of the magistrate is gone; she is trembling, staring at the golden light. "Ta Uyen, I swear it. I have not sent a signal since I crossed the river."

I do not look at the sky. I look at the heavy parchment on the floor.

I step forward, the cold stone biting into my heels, and pick up the scroll. The wax seal at the bottom matches the heavy gold instrument she carried in her belt. The magic radiating from the ink is identical to the sterile sunlight that courses through her veins.

"Target: The Eclipse Eater," I read aloud, my voice dropping into a low, feral vibration that echoes off the vaulted ceiling. "Authorization to detonate the dawn-core upon proximity. You did not come here to arrest a thief, Lien Chau. You came to act as a bomb. You crossed the black river to detonate your own lifespan and wipe my entire city from existence."

She swallows hard, pulling the velvet sheet tighter around her shoulders. The flushed, beautiful vulnerability I just mapped with my mouth hardens into a desperate, defensive line.

"It was my mandate," she says, lifting her chin, attempting to reconstruct her armor out of thin air. "The Sun Court demanded a permanent solution to the starvation leaking from your borders. Before I lost my shadow, before I knew… I accepted the order."

I stare at the glowing letters on the parchment.

A permanent solution to the starvation.

The words hang in the freezing air, and suddenly, the vast, cavernous architecture of the last century clicks into perfect, horrifying alignment. The memories flash behind my eyes: the first shadow that went mad with hunger. The way the rot always tasted of sterile sunlight. The rebellion striking exactly where the black river met the living shores.

I crush the parchment in my fist.

The Sun Court did not send a magistrate because my shadows were starving the living. The Sun Court engineered the starvation. They seeded the hunger, dropping their diseased, cast-off magic into the black river so it would infect my citizens. They created a plague, forced me to eat the infected souls to contain it, and then used the very madness they engineered as the legal justification to erase the Underworld.

I am not the villain of their story. I am the scavenger they forced to swallow their rot so they could keep their hands clean.

"You created it," I whisper, the realization chilling me deeper than the stone. I look up at her. "Your pristine court seeded the hunger. You turned my people into rabid dogs so you could play the righteous executioner."

"No," Lien Chau breathes, stepping toward me, her hand outstretched. "No, the court would never—"

"Do not touch me," I snarl. The beast rises, pushing against my human skin, lengthening my fingernails into void-black talons. "Your shadow knew. That is why it rebelled. It took all the starvation you repressed, all the sick ambition your court feeds on, and brought it down here."

She freezes, her hand hovering in the empty space between us. The devastation in her eyes is absolute. She looks at the glowing, healed core resting on the obsidian table—the soul I purified for her without taking it.

"I will not execute the order," she says, her voice a ragged whisper. She reaches for the core. "I have my shadow back. I can seal the river from this side. I can shut the gates and trap the Sun Court’s army above. We can stop them."

"You cannot shut the gates, Magistrate," I say smoothly.

Lien Chau stops. She looks from the core on the table to my face.

I raise my left hand. During our surrender, when she was arched against me, when my hands were anchoring her hips and tracing the rigid line of her spine, I was not merely holding her. I was letting the beast’s void-magic press against the heavy gold seal hidden in her discarded clothes. I was mapping the exact, lethal geometry of the Sun Court’s law.

The dark matter in my palm solidifies. It twists and hardens, glowing with a stolen, corrupted gold. It forms a perfect, inverted imprint of her eclipse-seal.

Lien Chau’s breath hitches. Her eyes dart from the dark seal in my hand to my face. The absolute horror of the realization washes over her. The intimacy we just shared was not a lie, but I had weaponized it. I had used the moment she lowered her armor to forge the key to her realm.

"You used me," she whispers, the words tearing out of her throat.

"You came to destroy my realm," I tell her, my voice layered with the deafening roar of the beast. "I am simply returning the favor."

I slam the forged seal down onto the center of the obsidian altar.

The entire spire shudders. The shockwave ripples outward, tearing through the bedrock. Far below, at the edge of the city, the massive iron gates of the black river do not just open. They shatter outward. The wails of my shadow army echo up the basalt walls as the path to the living world is ripped wide open. I am not locking the cage. I am letting the monsters out.

Lien Chau’s face goes completely pale. The devastation vanishes, instantly replaced by the absolute, unyielding zero of the Sun Court’s law.

She does not reach for her clothes. She reaches for the healed, glowing core of her shadow. She grips it in her right hand, her thumb locking over the fracture point that will detonate her entire future lifespan and obliterate everything within the city walls.

The invasion alarm blares from the sky above.
