The heavy iron ward-key rests untouched on the obsidian table, exactly where Neset left it. The grinding of the paddlewheels beneath the floorboards seems to quiet, drowned out by the heavy, measured rhythm of my own breathing. She holds the absolute power to walk off this ship, to leave the Devourer to the rot of the underworld. She has not moved toward the door.
I reach up to the heavy, gold-plated collar around my neck. The metal is a symbol of my office, a gilded cage meant to separate the executioner from the condemned. I unfasten the clasp. The gold drops to the stone floor with a sharp, echoing clatter. Next goes the pleated linen sash, then the ceremonial bracers that bind my wrists. I strip the armor of the court away until there is nothing left but the bare, vulnerable skin of a thirty-nine-year-old woman. Beneath my ribs, the beast thrashes, terrified of the exposure, screaming that if I am seen without my armor, I will only be a monster. I force its jaws shut. I lock it in the darkest, deepest cage of my mind. I will not bring claws to this. I will not bring teeth.
Neset’s dark eyes track the fall of my garments. She steps away from the table. She does not reach for the key. She reaches for me.
Her calloused, ink-stained fingers press flat against the center of my chest, right over my erratic, hammering heart. The touch is a jolt of pure electricity. The chill of the subterranean river evaporates.
"You do not have to hold your breath," Neset whispers. Her hands slide up to my shoulders, her thumbs tracing the tense cords of my neck. "I know what you are, Meryt. And I am still standing here."
The last remnants of my glacial control shatter. I step into her space, closing the agonizing gap between us. I catch her waist, pulling her flush against my body. She gasps, a sharp intake of air as the heat of my bare skin sears through the thin linen of her scribe’s tunic. I lift her, effortlessly hoisting her onto the edge of the obsidian table. She parts her knees to let me step entirely into her space, trapping my hips between her thighs. She tangles her fingers in my hair, pulling my mouth down to hers.
The kiss is not a negotiation. It is a surrender. I taste the sharp tang of adrenaline and the faint, dusty sweetness of dried papyrus on her tongue. I do not devour; I worship. My hands map the sharp angles of her ribs, dragging the hem of her tunic upward until it joins my linen on the floor. Her skin is flushed, burning against the damp air of the cabin.
I slide my hands down the curve of her spine, gripping her hips, holding her steady as I press my mouth to the erratic pulse at the base of her throat. She arches into the touch, a low, broken sound tearing from her lips. The sound drives a spike of pure, blinding heat straight to my core. I trace the heavy, aching wetness between her thighs, my fingers sliding through the slick heat. She shudders violently, her nails digging into my bare shoulders.
"Meryt," she breathes, her voice unraveling.
I watch her face, needing the absolute, undeniable proof of her choice. She answers by shifting her weight, opening herself completely to my touch, her hips lifting in a desperate, silent demand. I push two fingers deep inside her. The tight, wet heat of her body swallows me. She cries out, her head falling back, the rigid posture of the forensic scribe melting into raw, unfiltered sensation. I set the rhythm, my thumb finding the swollen bundle of nerves above, pressing and circling as my fingers drag in and out of her slick core. Every stroke strips away the executioner. Every ragged breath she takes anchors me to my humanity. She shatters around my fingers, her body gripping me in relentless, pulsing waves, her voice echoing off the bronze walls as she calls my name. Not my title. My name.
When the tremors finally subside, we remain tangled together in the quiet dark, slick with sweat. The heavy, suffocating isolation of the last ten years feels as though it has been excised from my chest.
Neset slides off the table, her legs unsteady, and picks up the broken clay tablet. She reaches for the iron stylus in her discarded sash.
"The scale was tipped by a lie," she says, her voice still raspy, but the sharp intellect is back. "If we overwrite the false entry at the source, the balance must correct itself. The magic demands it."
She presses the stylus to her own palm, drawing a bead of bright, living blood. She presses it into the gouged clay, whispering a truth from her own memory—a small, genuine sacrifice of her past to fill the void of the scraped name. I lay my hand over hers, letting my dark, executioner’s blood mix with hers to seal the verdict.
Above us, in the cavernous judgment hall, a deep, resonant hum vibrates through the hull. A beam of pure, blinding golden light pierces down through the deck grates, illuminating the cabin. The Scale of Truth has leveled. The sickening weight of the phantom sins lifts from my stomach, replaced by a profound, hollow clarity. The mechanism is clean. We have beaten the Regent’s lie.
I lean my head against the bronze bulkhead, bathed in the golden light, pulling Neset against my side. The absolute perfection of the moment lulls the wary predator inside me to sleep. I ignore the faint, discordant vibration echoing beneath the pure tone of the scale—a subtle, structural physical law of the Duat whispering that a fulcrum cannot balance itself without a permanent, living anchor. I do not care about the anchor. I only care about the woman breathing softly against my chest.
I turn my head, pressing a soft kiss to her bare shoulder. The damp skin is cooling in the subterranean air. I trail my lips down her collarbone, resting my cheek against the center of her chest, listening to the rhythm of her life.
Thump. Grind. Thump. Grind.
I freeze. The breath dies in my throat.
That is not the soft, fluid flutter of a human heart. It is heavy. It is metallic. It echoes with the exact, massive grinding resonance of the bronze gears turning the sun-barge. I press my hand flat against her sternum, the golden light of our false victory suddenly turning freezing and sick in my eyes.
Every beat against my palm is pulling the massive weight of the underworld’s balance. Her heart is not beating for her. It is beating for the crown.
