Where forbidden tales are told.

The future tastes like copper and white ash.

It rips out of my lungs in a violent exhale, a phantom life scattering into the freezing rain. For a fraction of a second, I see the ghost of what I just burned: a sprawling, sunlit tattoo parlor in the lower districts, four apprentices laughing over a brass table, my hands wrinkled and stained with peaceful, mundane ink.

Then the vision disintegrates. The typhoon eye over my sternum devours it.

Below us, the rogue storm front screams as if struck by a physical blade. The barometric pressure violently equalizes. The black wall of wind meant to drown the slum island shudders, fractures, and dissolves into a harmless, heavy rain.

My knees buckle. I hit the jagged basalt.

I don’t feel the impact. The cold has finally breached my core, turning the blood in my veins to sluggish slush. I curl inward, my shaking hands clutching my chest. The bond is quiet now. Sated. But the ambient temperature on this floating volcanic rock is dropping rapidly toward freezing.

Heavy boots crunch on the stone. Kaito drops to his knees beside me.

He doesn’t speak. He strips off his soaked, heavy leather coat and wraps it entirely around my shivering frame. The residual heat trapped in the lining is a furnace. He slides his arms under my knees and shoulders, lifting me effortlessly against his bare chest, and carries me away from the precipice.

He ducks into a shallow, naturally formed cave carved into the basalt spire, shielding us from the howling wind. The silence inside the rock formation is sudden and absolute, broken only by the violent chattering of my teeth.

Kaito sets me down gently against the smooth, dry stone at the back of the cave. He kneels between my boots. His silver eyes are wide, the slit-pupils completely swallowed by the dark, dilated irises. He is looking at me not as a vessel, not as a political asset, but as something terrifyingly fragile that just paid a god’s price for his people.

"You burned a whole life," he rasps, the acoustic rumble of his voice vibrating in the tight space.

"I chose to," I whisper, my jaw trembling so hard the words fracture. "It was… my choice."

"You are freezing to death, Aoi." He reaches a hand toward my cheek, then stops, his fingers hovering an inch from my skin. The memory of the bond tearing a future from me when we touched holds him back. His hand curls into a fist, pulling away. "The ambient heat isn’t enough. You need the circuit open. You need the current."

    "Then we open it."

I push the heavy leather coat off my shoulders. The freezing cave air bites into my soaked clothes, but I ignore it. I reach to the ground, my numb fingers scraping against the floor until I find a loose shard of black volcanic glass, coated in wet, heavy soot. A crude substitute for a needle and ink.

I hold the soot-stained shard up to him.

"No forced currents," I say, my breath pluming white between us. "A dual stroke. You want my heat, you ask. I want yours, I ask."

Kaito stares at the jagged piece of stone. The muscles in his jaw flex. He takes the shard from my trembling fingers.

He shifts closer, his massive frame trapping my body heat against the wall. He doesn’t touch me with his hands. He leans in, his silver eyes locked on mine, and brings the sharp edge of the soot-coated stone to the hollow of my throat, right above the collar of my ruined shirt.

    He draws a line.

It isn’t a cut. It is a firm, deliberate stroke of black ash, tracing the exact curve of my collarbone, hooking downward toward the swirling eye of the typhoon tattoo. The drag of the stone sends a localized spark of heat straight into my nervous system. It is a question asked in geometry.

I take the shard from him.

My hand shakes, but not from the cold. I press the soot-stained edge against his bare chest, right over his heart, crossing the boundary of the solid iron-ink cage I tattooed on him years ago. I draw a sharp, vertical line of black ash, dissecting the dragon’s scales, answering the geometry.

    Permission.

The moment I lift the stone, the bond ignites.

It does not drag. It does not demand a future. Because the gate was opened from both sides simultaneously, the magic floods the channel in a smooth, devastating rush of pure thermal energy. The fire in his draconic blood surges across the gap between us, crashing into my freezing veins.

I gasp, dropping the stone. Kaito catches my face in both of his massive, calloused hands.

His skin is molten. The shock of the heat is so profound it borders on pain, thawing my bones in a microsecond. The typhoon mark on my chest hums, a low, contented vibration that syncs perfectly with the heavy thud of his heart against my palms.

"Aoi," he breathes, his voice entirely wrecked.

He crushes his mouth to mine.

The kiss is a collision. There is no hesitation, no holding back the predatory edge of his nature. His lips are scalding, his tongue sweeping into my mouth with a desperate, claiming force that tastes of ozone and rain. I grip the thick, corded muscles of his shoulders, anchoring myself against the onslaught. The bond amplifies everything—the rough friction of his jaw against my cheek, the crushing weight of his chest pressing me into the stone, the sheer, staggering magnitude of his relief that I am alive.

I drag my nails down his spine, tracing the edge of my own ink. He groans, the sound vibrating directly into my mouth. He grips my hips, lifting me effortlessly, dragging my thighs to straddle his waist. The soaked fabric of our clothes is an unbearable barrier.

    We tear them away.

The freezing air of the cave doesn’t stand a chance against the localized weather system burning between our skin. He is entirely human, but the heat radiating from him is pure, unchained dragon. He pins my wrists to the wall above my head, his mouth leaving mine to drag open-mouthed kisses down the column of my neck. He bites lightly at the soot line on my collarbone, the scrape of his teeth sending a violent shockwave of pleasure straight to my core.

"Tell me to stop," he murmurs against my skin, his chest heaving, the silver in his eyes glowing in the dark. "Tell me to close it."

"If you close it," I gasp, wrapping my legs around his waist, pulling his hips flush against mine, "I’ll carve the door open myself."

He makes a low, guttural sound in the back of his throat and drives inside me.

The connection is absolute. A blinding white flash behind my eyes. The physical friction of his body stretching me is completely overlaid by the psychic flood of the bond. I feel his pleasure as my own—a searing, localized fire exactly where we are joined. I feel the frantic, territorial possessiveness gripping his mind, the desperate need to bury himself so deep inside me the empire can never extract us.

I break my wrists free from his grip and drag my hands into his midnight hair, pulling his mouth back down to mine. We move together in a violent, desperate rhythm. Every thrust drives the heat deeper into my marrow. The typhoon eye on my chest spins, generating a vortex of raw magic that whirls the dust and ash around the cave in a perfect circle.

I do not feel like a vessel. I do not feel consumed. The iron cage I drew on his ribs aligns perfectly with my own pulse. I am riding the storm.

When the climax hits, it shatters the air pressure. I scream his name into his mouth, my muscles clenching around him, the bond echoing the detonation so violently the basalt walls of the cave vibrate. Kaito shudders, burying his face in my neck, his entire massive frame trembling as he pours everything into the circuit, anchoring himself to the only reality that matters.

For a long time, there is only the sound of our ragged breathing and the steady rain outside.

I lie against his chest, the heavy leather coat pulled over us both. His fingers trace mindless, soothing circles against my bare spine. The cold is entirely gone. The bond is a warm, steady hum, a localized sanctuary.

I trace the flawed whip-shading on the tail of the dragon on his ribs. Maybe this works, I think, the exhaustion pulling my eyes heavy. Maybe a contract built on mutual consent is enough to rewrite the rules of the Ryū. Maybe we are safe.

"They won’t take you," Kaito whispers into the crown of my hair, his voice heavy with sleep and absolute certainty. "Even if the armada breaches the cloud-wall. The capital thinks they own the map on your chest. But they don’t know I still hold the root."

My hand freezes on his ribs.

The steady, warm hum of the bond turns instantly to ice.

The root. The master scale. The one piece of draconic anatomy that dictates absolute compliance from a marked vessel. The piece of magic that overrides choice.

He didn’t destroy it. He kept it.

Before I can push away from his chest, a shadow eclipses the mouth of the cave.

The air pressure drops so fast my ears bleed. The silhouette of a high-tier imperial herald steps into the shelter, flanked by the massive, scaled heads of two wyverns peering in from the rain.

The herald does not draw a weapon. He holds up a heavy, lead-lined box. It is cracked open. Inside, glowing with a sickening, bruised purple light that perfectly matches the rhythm of the typhoon on my chest, is a single, massive, unpolished dragon scale.

"Prince Kaito," the herald says, his voice dripping with venomous formality. "The Emperor thanks you for securing the compass. And he demands you hand over the leash."
